Will the USDA label GMOs? Possibly. On May 1st, an internal letter leaked to the Associated Press detailed Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack’s plans to create a labeling program in which companies could pay the USDA’s Agricultural Marketing Service to verify that their products contained no genetically modified ingredients.
According to the Associated Press, “The certification is the first of its kind and would be voluntary — and companies would have to pay for it. If approved, the foods would be able to carry a “USDA Process Verified” label along with a claim that they are free of GMOs.”
But wait, isn’t the non-profit Non-GMO Project already doing just that?
