Welcome! I created this blog in 2008 as a resource for healthier living with less judgment. I'm a mother of three, former journalist, and co-founder of the (shuttered, sniff) sustainable beauty and fashion site EcoStiletto. I was Executive Director of the nonprofits The 5 Gyres Institute and Healthy Child Healthy World and appeared as a sustainable lifestyle expert on "The "TODAY Show" and "CNN Headline News," among others. All parents are proud of their kids. That’s just All parents are proud of their kids. That’s just what we do. I’m no exception. For the last three days, I’ve been listening on repeat to my son’s first album, proud as a peacock. But I’m also a music lover and a musician and I would love this album even if Gabriel — known on Spotify as Garb — hadn’t made it. This is a concept album: The songs follow the trajectory of a relationship and connect viscerally to all the raw and unfiltered emotions of first love. He is accompanied by incredible jazz musicians — known here as the Rags — from the Berkeley music program, creating this really interesting folk jazz fusion. For three years I’ve had the honor of contributi For three years I’ve had the honor of contributing to @ucsb_eli — the Environmental Leadership Incubator program — through the @ucsb_envstudies department at UCSB, my alma mater. I teach two concentrated sessions of marketing and communications to the incredible students who have committed a year of their lives to projects that they conceived of and passionately believe in. For some reason, this annual appointment always seems to arrive at a time when I am feeling disheartened about the state of the world. Each morning, I read global perspectives from reputable outlets on events that are happening in the United States and around the world. I subscribe to the hard-copy version, which arrives in my mailbox — acknowledging the higher climate impacts over digital, while prioritizing my sanity. Last year, I bought my dad a subscription, too. But I was disturbed to read their description of activism a related to #COP27 as "Greenpeace blasted Egypt for partnering with one of the world's biggest users of plastic..." Deliberately vague or editorial kerfuffle? The truth is that activist groups, which include but are not limited to Greenpeace, have specifically called out COP27 sponsor @thecocacolaco. Coke is not only one of the world's biggest users of plastic but is also one of the world's biggest polluters -- evidence can be found in @breakfreefromplastic audits, which occur annually around the globe. (I advise @bigblueandyou, one of the organizations that participated this year.) We all share a passion for intersectional environmentalism and inspiring youth — especially young women of color — to get involved with protecting our ocean. Because there’s only one Big Blue!
