Mommy Greenest Approved: Cree LED Light Bulbs
We’ve been in our house for more than a decade, and it feels like a revolving door of renovation. But one thing I love is changing out our lightbulbs for Cree LEDs. I’m newly part of their ambassador program so I’ll be sharing more info over the next few months, but the thing that hooked me about Cree LED is that they’re the only LED bulbs that look like regular bulbs—but they use 84% less energy and last 25 times longer than incandescents. Plus they’re priced less than most incandescents and are covered by a 10-year warranty. But here’s the kicker: They don’t buzz when you dim them, like CFLs. Take a look at the video I made so you can see—okay, I guess that would be hear, technically—the difference. Now I don’t have to think about my bulbs until 2024!

I was so excited when I heard I won 1 of these bulbs in this contest. I’ve been on everyone’s case about using CFLs, now I’ll do the same w/ LEDs! I love the fact that it can be used in lamps that have 3-way or dimmer switches! This bulb seemed like a bright 60 watt, but, then again, CFLs were never quite as bright as they claimed to be (I use a 100 watt equivalent in my bedroom ceiling & it’s not as bright as a regular 100 watt). It may seem a bit pricey, but they last much longer & use way less energy, so it’s worth way more than the price tag! Eventually, like CFLs, the price will probably go down, since it’s still new to the market. Highly recommended product!

Awesome, thanks so much for sharing your feedback Denise!!!
Sarah
We have made “green” switches on many things in our home but not lights yet! Probably because we are renting and just using the ones they have. But, I would love to win and try!
Amaliya
We rent as well but since we pay the utility bill I have switched our high usage to LEDs with a mental note to take them with us when we leave.
Linda Kish
I have been using CFLs for many years but these look interesting. I’d like to try them.
Nicky
i don’t have a favourite yet – would love to try this one!
Laureen
So far I have only purchased LG LED bulbs, but haven’t tried them yet. I’ve only used CFLs but am keen on LEDs as a better environmental option. Thanks for the chance to win!
Rachel Sarnoff
Yay, good luck!
Robert Abramson
Use a Cree and you will see!
Rachel Sarnoff
Catchy! 🙂
Christina
GE LED , this is the only brand I’ve tried. Whatever helps save energy.

I like LED bulbs best cos I broke a CFL once and it freaked me out! I luckily decided to google it and it was one with mercury in it so clean up was NOT fun!
Rachel Sarnoff
Ooh scary! Yes, that is a problem. Thanks for sharing!
Laura
I like LED sooooo much better than fluorescent! I never thought the mercury was very eco friendly, even if the energy saving was!
Jen K
I’m not sure what brand, but definitely LEDs!

I don’t have a favourite yet…

Some time back, I changed out all my incandescent bulbs to the CFLs that I got free or discounted through my electric company–I even took them with me when I moved (putting back the old ones in the old place.) Now, six years later, I’m finding my little collecttion of CFLs is dwindling.
Seems like it’s a good time to check out the Cree LED bulbs!
Rachel Sarnoff
Indeed!!
Lindsey
I don’t know – I’ve never tried one.
Rachel Sarnoff
Oh you have to! Such a lifesaver!
Linn
Good to know about these!

I don’t have a particular favourite. I usually buy the cheapest CFL at Canadian Tire :0 But I’m keen to try Cree. I especially like that the light mimics an incandescent.
Rachel Sarnoff
They are really pretty–you can see from the photo. Very warm!
lori byrd
got to be cree!

I’m not sure what brand we’ve used (my hubby buys the bulbs), but we’re not fond of the spirals, particularly in certain places. Love the fact that these look like traditional bulbs! Will have to try them. (I also agree with an earlier poster that the spiral bulbs don’t always last that long, which is a real disappointment.
Dinah
Oooh my rent & utilities have almost doubled in the last year; I could really use these bulbs! And wow, Rachel hasn’t heard of “3-way Bulbs” I guess lamps made to use those must be more of an “older thing”…it’s simply 3 levels of brightness in one bulb, not sure if you can put a 3-way bulb in any lamp or if it’s supposed to be a lamp made for that…huh..
Rachel Sarnoff
Hm, I don’t know… Will have to check on that. Thanks for commenting, Dinah!
B
Looking forward to trying Cree!
sandra
we tried the CFL’s
Betty
Love using Cree bulbs

This kind of light bulb will help a lot around our home, need to decrease the electric bill as much as possible especially in the summertime.
Meagan
My parents replaced their whole house with CFLs a few years ago, and I took all their old bulbs because I think it’s wasteful just to toss them in the trash. I haven’t had to purchase new bulbs yet, but it’s great to know about this option.
Rachel Sarnoff
Yes, the best time to replace is when the old ones no longer work; and make sure you dispose of them properly as well. Sounds like you know all this already though 🙂 Thanks Meagan!
adrienne zedella
Cree for me!
Sarah
The Cree bulbs – so much better than the spiral bulbs that often are too long for the shade.
Kim Cage
I use the spiral but they do make a noise.. Does Cree make a three-way bulb?
Rachel Sarnoff
I don’t know what that is…? Check out http://www.CreeBulb.com. They definitely don’t buzz on a dimmer!
Kim Cage
They do make a 3-way(that is 3 different watages like 30-60-100) but very expensive!Almost $22
Rachel Sarnoff
Thanks for looking into that Kim! I think the savings is in the longevity–you don’t have to replace it for 10 years!
lisa
i like best, i guess, the regular home type, the Standard A-Type Bulbs for consumers
Rachel Sarnoff
Try these new LEDs, they look the same but are SO much better in terms of energy consumption. Thanks for commenting, Lisa!
blake
this one!
Jessica
I have only tried CFL’s, so I would love to try these. They look, and sound, great!
mel
I’m going with Cree because they look like a regular bulb.
Rachel Sarnoff
They really do! And the light is beautiful 🙂
Tim
I love my Cree bulbs and I love the fact that I will not have to change them for 10+ years.
lindsey
love these!
lorie pattison
definitely led bulbs…..especially Cree…..the spiral bulbs are not cool at all and they dont last as promised….Thanks for the chance, Rachel!

I’ve only bought and tried Feit Electric Ecobulb, if anyone recommends another brand, please let me know.
Rachel Sarnoff
Cree! 🙂
Adrian Sheepers
I don’t what brand eco bulb I have used in the past but I don’t often find they last as long as they do. They are expensive. And they do definitely buzz on a dimmer. I also find that you have to be really careful what bulbs you buy as they can be a really harsh cold light instead of the warm light the incandescent offer. I don’t know if we have Cree in Canada. But I will look for them.
Rachel Sarnoff
Definitely, no buzz on the dimmer!
Ambi
My favorite eco friendly bulb is Cree. They last for 20 years and only use 11 watts or less of electricity!
