Essential Oil Natural Deodorant DIY Recipe

Have you tried plastic free natural deodorant? Now even mainstream natural deodorant brands are touting aluminum- and paraben-free — for good reason, as there is no excuse for putting toxic chemicals near vulnerable areas like lymph nodes and breasts. But most natural deodorants still aren’t taking on the plastic problem, and most are made with baking soda, which gives me a painful rash under my arms. (No. Fun.) Recently, I’ve been experimenting with essential oil natural deodorant blends and let me tell you: In the right combination they really WORK!

I try to only use essential oils that are USDA certified organic and GMO-free, as much to avoid pesticides on my skin as to vote with my wallet for better agriculture that doesn’t harm workers and the Earth. I bulk-buy base oil in perpetually recyclable glass and apply with a refillable roller, so it is completely free of single-use plastic. For these essential oil natural deodorant recipes, I used:*

Vivaplex Amber Glass Roll-On Bottle
Cliganic Certified Organic Argan Oil
Healing Solutions Certified Organic Peppermint Essential Oil
Cliganic Certified Organic Sweet Orange Essential Oil
Cliganic Certified Organic Lemongrass Essential Oil
Healing Solutions Certified Organic Pink Grapefruit Essential Oil
Nature Vibes Certified Organic Ylang Ylang Essential Oil

Here are my two favorite seasonal recipes!

Spring/Summer Blend:

  • 5 drops Sweet Orange
  • 5 drops Lemongrass
  • 1 drop Peppermint
  • 1/2 to 1 ounce Argan Oil base

Fall/Winter Blend:

  • 5 drops Grapefruit
  • 5 drops Ylang Ylang
  • 1 drop Peppermint
  • 1/2 to 1 ounce Argan Oil base

Of course, these essential oil natural deodorant blends are not antiperspirant (meaning they won’t plug up sweat glands), but they do work to keep me funk-free for 24 hours. I think the fact that they are oil-based may have something to do with this, like the oil is blocking the production of bacteria? (I’m not a professional so take that theory with a grain of salt.) Plus, who cares how — they work!

Have you tried essential oil natural deodorant? What’s your favorite combo? Please share in comments, because when this vial runs out I’m mixing up a whole new scent!
