Mommy Greenest Approved: Pristine Beauty Breast Cancer Kiss Off

products that fight breast cancer without toxic chemicals on white backgroundHere’s something that pisses me off: Companies manufacturing with toxic chemicals linked to breast cancer that stick pink ribbons on their products in the name of breast cancer prevention. Each year, I hop on my soapbox to rail against this practice of pinkwashing—most egregiously by the Susan G. Komen Foundation, which you can read about here. During the month of October, I regularly share three easy tactics to avoid pinkwashing in food and beauty products as well as the 17 easy-to-avoid chemicals in everyday products that Harvard University identified as causing breast cancer. But there’s one company that I don’t have to worry about: Founded by a breast cancer survivor who realized early on the connection between toxic chemicals and the disease, Pristine Beauty’s personal care products are carcinogen-free and donate to the fight against breast cancer on an ongoing basis. Plus, they’re really, truly awesome. [Read more…]

Mommy Greenest Approved: Schmidt’s Natural Deodorant

jars of natural deodorant against a white backgroundWith the temperature and sweat factor rising, it’s time to break out the big guns. But not antiperspirant! Those are typically chock full of toxic chemicals that some scientists believe are linked to breast cancer, not to mention parabens and phthalates, which mess up your hormones. I had been curious about Schmidt’s Natural Deodorant ever since I read the rave reviews: Everyone from Alicia Silverstone to my friend Sophie Uliano of Gorgeously Green claimed it keeps you drier than other natural deodorants. But could Schmidt’s really keep up with 100-degree weather? I planned on finding out—especially since I had just hooked up my Mommy Greenest friends (read: you) with a chance to win one of five free jars, plus 15% off. [Read more…]

Mommy Greenest Approved: Primal Pit Paste

four natural deodorants on white backgroundTwo more reasons to switch to natural deodorant: An Italian study recently published in the Journal of Inorganic Biochemistry found that breast cancer patients demonstrated higher levels of aluminum; a 2012 study out of Switzerland concluded, “Our observations do not formally identify aluminium as a breast carcinogen, but challenge the safety ascribed to its widespread use in underarm cosmetics.” And although the National Cancer Institute is “not aware of any conclusive evidence linking the use of underarm antiperspirants or deodorants and the subsequent development of breast cancer, public opinion begs to differ: Search “natural deodorant” on Amazon and you get more than five thousand products.

We’re gaining on you, aluminum.

But then there’s that nagging little question of efficacy. I’ve written about the natural-deodorant-unless-it’s-an-important-day trend—lived it, in fact, until I discovered the trick to making natural deodorants work.

But now, I may have discovered a natural deodorant is so strong, so foolproof that you can actually put it on in the morning and go all day without stinkiness. Yes, really. [Read more…]
