MG #SwapDrop2016 Featured in Organic Spa!

“To raise awareness, Sarnoff created the annual Shop Drop Challenge, now in its third year, which asks participants to put a month-long pause on shopping. ‘You commit for 30 days to not buy anything new, but instead to swap or thrift if you need something,’ she explains. ‘The idea is to encourage people to explore swapping and thrifting and perhaps change their habits for the rest of the year.’ Sarnoff calculates that if every American woman participates, that would save $10 billion dollars and one billion pounds of textile waste.” Read more in Organic Spa’s “A Fair Trade: Swap Your Way to a New Wardrobe” article. Pediatricians Cut Monsanto’s Cord

Proof positive that one woman can change the world: Mamavation and Shiftcon founder Leah Segedie recently helped the American Academy of Pediatrics to cut sponsorship ties with Monsanto, which manufactures the carcinogenic pesticide glyphosate and is facing multiple lawsuits from farm workers as its stock prices plummet. Mommy Greenest Guide to Healthy Eating

African American woman holding bag of groceries to make healthy eating recipesI’m no stranger to junk food. After enduring years of healthy eating (brown-bag lunches with an oversized, barely washed carrot from my father’s vegetable garden peeking out of the top), I spent about a decade of rebellion indulging in a plethora of processed foods. But the (organic) apple doesn’t fall far from the tree: Despite the occasional foray into junk food, I always feel better when following these healthy eating habits. [Read more…]

Workers Sue Monsanto; Stock Tumbles

Timing is everything. On September 29th, the Environmental Protection Agency updated the Agricultural Worker Protection Standard with far more rigorous pesticide protection standards. The following day, lawsuits against pesticide manufacturer Monsanto were filed in California and New York by workers who claim their cancers were caused by exposure to pesticides. Coincidink? I don’t think so. [Read more…]

Mommy Greenest Guide to Eco Friendly Fashion

eco friendly fashion model in black high heels against blue walls

You’ve read about fast fashion, in which underpaid workers in third-world countries provide western consumers with cheap and disposable goods. You’re all clear on cotton, which uses 17% of the world’s insecticides and is 94% Genetically Modified. And that the textile industry is the world’s second largest water polluter, after agriculture. But with that in mind, sometimes you just have to shop, right? Which is why it makes sense now to figure out what matters to you when it comes to the clothes and accessories that you buy–especially if you’re concerned about your impact on the Earth. (For more on that, check out the Mommy Greenest Guide to Going Green.) With this in mind, here’s my guide to eco friendly fashion! [Read more…]

Mommy Greenest Approved: Pristine Beauty Breast Cancer Kiss Off

products that fight breast cancer without toxic chemicals on white backgroundHere’s something that pisses me off: Companies manufacturing with toxic chemicals linked to breast cancer that stick pink ribbons on their products in the name of breast cancer prevention. Each year, I hop on my soapbox to rail against this practice of pinkwashing—most egregiously by the Susan G. Komen Foundation, which you can read about here. During the month of October, I regularly share three easy tactics to avoid pinkwashing in food and beauty products as well as the 17 easy-to-avoid chemicals in everyday products that Harvard University identified as causing breast cancer. But there’s one company that I don’t have to worry about: Founded by a breast cancer survivor who realized early on the connection between toxic chemicals and the disease, Pristine Beauty’s personal care products are carcinogen-free and donate to the fight against breast cancer on an ongoing basis. Plus, they’re really, truly awesome. [Read more…]
