Mommy Greenest Eco Rules

teenaged boy wearing jeans with bare feet up on couchRemember that house, back in high school? It wasn’t your house, but you felt comfortable enough to put your feet up on the furniture. It wasn’t your mom, but you talked to her sometimes about what was going on in your life. Sometimes an afternoon turned into dinner turned into movie night with the family. You knew where they kept the cereal, and got your own bowl.

That’s my house.

It could be because my kids are well-liked and well-adjusted—or it could be that we’re a three-block walk from the mall. But most afternoons, the doorbell rings and a gaggle of teenagers troops in. By evening, there are boys playing guitar in my son’s room, and girls practicing dance routines in my daughter’s. My little one runs between, pestering both.

It does get loud, but I love having a full house. What I don’t love, however, is how with other kids around my own forget the eco rules I’ve taught them. I try to keep my reminders light, but at the end of the day I’m nagging—both my own and somebody else’s kids. These are my eco rule pet peeves! [Read more…]

Mommy Greenest Approved: Schmidt’s Natural Deodorant

jars of natural deodorant against a white backgroundWith the temperature and sweat factor rising, it’s time to break out the big guns. But not antiperspirant! Those are typically chock full of toxic chemicals that some scientists believe are linked to breast cancer, not to mention parabens and phthalates, which mess up your hormones. I had been curious about Schmidt’s Natural Deodorant ever since I read the rave reviews: Everyone from Alicia Silverstone to my friend Sophie Uliano of Gorgeously Green claimed it keeps you drier than other natural deodorants. But could Schmidt’s really keep up with 100-degree weather? I planned on finding out—especially since I had just hooked up my Mommy Greenest friends (read: you) with a chance to win one of five free jars, plus 15% off. [Read more…]

Do You Know What’s In Your Raw Juice?

green raw juiceRaw juice is a serious trend. According to Barrons, raw juice manufacturers pulled in as much as $5 billion in 2012. So it’s no wonder that raw juicers are popping up on every corner. Unfortunately, not all of them are as wholesome as you might think: Unless you’re getting fresh raw juice from organic fruits and vegetables, you might be getting taken. Especially if you’re paying $12 a glass. Here’s what to look for in your raw juice.

Make Your Own Perfume for Spring

woman holds blue bottle to the cameraWant to avoid phthalates? Make your own perfume. Those pesky toxic chemicals have been linked to obesity, among other health problems. And because fragrance manufacturers don’t have to tell us what’s in their formulation there can be as many as 3,000 different chemicals in one bottle of perfume, many of which are phthalates. One way to make sure you know exactly what’s in your signature scent is to make your own perfume, as I started doing last year.  But after a few Mommy Greenest readers commented with worries about my vanilla-base perfume staining clothes and skin, I figured out a new recipe, a rose-scented number that’s perfect for spring. And it’s clear! Want to make your own perfume? With a few minutes and a few easy-to-get ingredients, you can! [Read more…]

Oh flowered dresses, you’re all I want to wear right now. Tomboys, you can keep your shorts and tank tops. What I’m craving is a long, diaphanous, flowered dress printed with tiny little sprigs of spring goodness. I saw Jessica Alba wearing one recently, and last fall’s spring runway stunners are just beginning to hit shelves. The flowered dress is this season’s staple! [Read more…]
